A foothill morning: trails and gardens
Deukmejian, Cherry Canyon, Descanso and the other places I send people who want to be outside before the heat takes over.
I just love the Foothills. Close to the city, just up the 2, but with a small-town feel and so many hiking trails and parks. These are the ones I actually frequent.
Deukmejian Wilderness Park, Glendale
A favorite hiking spot for many Glendale locals, with several trails, rock formations to climb and a creek after it rains. The Stone Barn Nature Center is open and worth a stop if you have kids, love nature or like hiking. Grassy areas for picnics, and yoga in the park with MAEVE and Greenspace Studio.
Cherry Canyon, La Cañada Flintridge
We went hiking here with friends and I couldn’t get over the arching trees and views of the Foothills. Highly recommend this trail for a sunset hike.
Descanso Gardens, La Cañada Flintridge
One of my favorite local gems: year-round beauty in the botanical gardens, art exhibits, family programming, annual events like Carved and the Enchanted Forest of Light, the Jones Coffee truck, The Market for grab-and-go, and the Farmhouse restaurant by Chef Rich Mead. 30,000 tulips are planted in the spring.
Beaudry Loop, Glendale
The Beaudry Loop trailhead in Glendale’s Verdugo Woodlands is beloved by neighbors and the views make everything worth it.
Teepee Trail, La Cañada Flintridge
I complained the whole way up, but wow, were the views incredible. Highly recommend! Bring water!
After the storm
Post-storm hikes and nature play with friends is a MAEVE tradition. Deukmejian’s creek is full of water and the kids have a blast.
