The Foothills Things to do

Holiday lights and seasonal traditions

Christmas Tree Lane, the Montrose car show, the arts festival and the other things we do every year.

We love driving around and checking out the holiday lights, and I’m always adding to the list. Here’s our year, roughly in order.

Spring: Tulips at Descanso

30,000 tulips planted in January bloom in March. Don’t miss it.

June: Montrose Arts & Crafts Festival

Three blocks of downtown Montrose, over 200 artisans, everything handmade, tons of food vendors, farmers, live music and fun stuff for the kids.

Around July 4: Montrose Car Show

300 hot rods, classics, exotics, trucks and motorcycles on the 2200 to 2400 blocks of Honolulu Ave. The sun is out and the cars are out.

October: Sparr Heights, La Cañada, and Pasadena

I start planning our trick-or-treating route early. Indianola Way in La Cañada and Madison Heights in Pasadena are also a hit.

December: Holiday Traditions

The towering deodar cedars on Santa Rosa Avenue have been lit up every year since 1920. Also on the list: a La Crescenta neighbor’s light show that’s a labor of love with a new show every year, and the house that goes all out every December. The holidays can be a difficult time for some, so the effort put into bringing smiles to so many faces is appreciated.

December: Descanso after dark

The Enchanted Forest of Light at Descanso Gardens, and Carved in the fall, are the annual events we plan around.
